Transforming cooler reliability and energy efficiency with AoFrio INSIDE

Summary

In a 12-month field trial across some of Colombia’s harshest retail environments, AoFrio INSIDE delivered a reduction in daily energy draw from the industry standard 1.3 kWh to 0.92 kWh, with zero motor failures. Modelled across a 10,000-cooler fleet, AoFrio INSIDE can deliver 767% ROI on service and maintenance costs with a payback period of 1.2 years, and USD$13 annual savings per cooler.

Engineered for harsh conditions

When AoFrio speaks with beverage bottlers in Latin America, a consistent theme emerges; coolers are expected to perform in conditions they were never originally designed for.

Take Colombia for example. Across large parts of the country, temperatures hover near 40°C (104°F) for months at a time. Add in harsh, dusty environments, and even premium coolers can struggle to reliably function. Every time a beverage cooler fails, there is a cost incurred; from maintenance and service callouts to lost revenue when beverages exceed the optimum temperature to drive sales.

For FEMSA Colombia, one of the region’s largest beverage bottlers, these challenges had been building over years. Maintenance budgets were stretched. Rising energy costs had retailers under pressure, leading to coolers being switched off. Sales were being impacted when coolers weren’t performing as they should.

FEMSA Colombia was open to exploring hardware innovations to overcome these challenges in its next generation of coolers. This is where AoFrio stepped in with a solution we knew could make a tangible difference.

Highlights

  1. ~40°C (104°F) ambient heat – Extreme temperature conditions impact performance across large regions impact performance.
  2. Dust and airborne contaminants – Outdoor and roadside placements clog condensers fast.
  3. Unstable mains power – Surges and brownouts shorten the life of legacy motors.

Engineered to perform: AoFrio INSIDE bundle

AoFrio’s answer to these challenges was not a single component, but an integrated approach; a hardware bundle called AoFrio INSIDE, comprised of the ECR 2 motor and the AoFrio Monitor IoT monitoring device.

Durable by design, the ECR 2 motor was engineered for FEMSA Colombia’s operating environments:

  1. IP67 sealing keeps dust and debris out, even in the harshest outdoor locations
  2. Corrosion-proof housing withstands humidity and airborne contaminants.
  3. High surge and thermal protection to handle heat spikes and unstable power without failure.
  4. Reverse airflow self-cleaning reduces condenser dust buildup, cutting service visits.
  5. 90–240V voltage compatibility handles the full range of mains power conditions without performance loss.
  6. 10-year expected lifespan reduces total replacement costs significantly across a large fleet.

The AoFrio INSIDE bundle gives fleet managers accurate insight into the efficiency and reliability improvements delivered over legacy models.

12-Month field trial

Zero Failures

While lab testing validated AoFrio INSIDE’s performance, it was essential to provide FEMSA Colombia with proof of delivery under real-world conditions before rolling out the solution at scale.

AoFrio partnered FEMSA Colombia’s team to run a 12-month field trial, placing AoFrio INSIDE-enabled coolers into real store environments. The trial results were unequivocal:

  1. Zero ECR 2 motor failures across all field units.
  2. Zero condenser blockages severe enough to impact airflow.
  3. No performance complaints from retailers or point-of-sale operators.

Visual inspections confirmed AoFrio INSIDE prevented the dust buildup plaguing competitor models.

In environments where coolers typically fail before their planned service interval, AoFrio INSIDE proved exceptionally resilient. Costly motor replacements, condenser cleanings, and emergency service visits were eliminated; savings that compound significantly across a large fleet.

Energy results that surprised even the bottler

While maintenance and reliability were FEMSA Colombia’s main concern, the energy savings from the trial quickly became impossible to ignore.

Across multiple cooler models, AoFrio INSIDE delivered:

-45% Average compressor running time cut.

Those savings can translate into reduced retailer power bills, while offering a pathway to a more sustainable, eco-friendly refrigeration fleet.

Fleet-Wide impact: 767% ROI

To understand the long-term potential of our solution, AoFrio modelled what results would look like if AoFrio INSIDE was deployed across our customer’s entire fleet of 10,000 coolers.

The results:

  1. 767% return on investment from reduced maintenance and improved uptime.
  2. 1.2 year payback period on hardware investment.
  3. USD $13 annual savings per cooler from maintenance alone (before energy savings).

For a 10,000-cooler fleet, that’s USD $130,000 in annual maintenance savings.

Conclusion

For FEMSA Colombia, what began as an effort to cut maintenance costs and boost reliability revealed wider benefits; from reduced energy use to improved retailer experiences. Once fully deployed AoFrio INSIDE will reshape their cooler fleet performance at scale, even in demanding environments.

With results validated in real-world conditions and more than 7x ROI, AoFrio INSIDE offers bottlers a practical path toward more efficient, more durable, and more sustainable refrigeration fleets.
